Stoke City have been dealt a serious blow with Leicester City opting to recall Tom Cannon from his loan with the Potters.
Stoke City haven’t had much to cheer about this season, but one shining light has been Tom Cannon. SCFC fought off stiff competition to bring him in on loan in the summer and their efforts more than paid off.
The Leicester City loanee’s tally of 11 goals in 25 games has seen him stand out for the Potters. However, his form has also brought significant transfer interest.
SCFC – Former Stoke City loan star Tom Cannon at Leicester City
Now, amid rumours of a battle between Sunderland and Sheffield United for a deal, Leicester City have now recalled Cannon. The plan is seemingly to sell him on, with one of the Championship duo set to be the destination.
It leaves Stoke City without their leading talisman, so here, we put forward three players the Potters could eye as replacements…
Chermiti – Everton
There would be an element of a gamble about this, but if another loan is needed to replace Cannon, Stoke City may well see Everton youngster Chermiti come onto their radar.
The 20-year-old has had an injury-hit campaign to date and he’s yet to score in 20 outings for the Toffees, but the cast majority of those have been brief games off the bench.
Chermiti is a bright prospect who could do with a shot at starting games and if he gets that, he could find some impressive goalscoring form.
If the Potters want a more proven option, they could look to dip into League One for Wycombe Wanderers talisman Richard One.
The Ivorian has made a name for himself thanks to a meteoric rise through the leagues and his tally of 13 goals has his as the third-tier’s second top scorer. He’s a lively and clinical forward with his best years ahead of him.
This deal would require a fee, but it might not be a break-the-bank signing, making it feasible for SCFC in a tricky January window.
Matias Kvistgadrden – Brondby IF
Last but not least, Stoke City may well find a shrewd deal overseas. If they want to cast a wider net, Brondby star Matias Kvistgaarden will be an exciting player to consider.
The 22-year-old has 14 goals and five assists to his name in 22 games this season. He mainly operates as a striker but is also capable of dropping deeper to link up the play.
Kvistgaarden is a player who could earn a move to a far higher level sooner rather than later, so SCFC should pounce soon to get an asset with serious resale value.
