Pope described this as “unacceptable” and attributed the issues to potential distractions and uncharacteristic plays during the game.
Earlier in the season, Pope had emphasized the importance of rebounding, aiming for a 30% offensive rebounding rate and approximately 14 offensive rebounds per game. Despite a strong 103-62 victory over Wright State in their season opener, the Wildcats secured only 7 offensive rebounds, prompting Pope to focus on improving this aspect of their game.
In a subsequent interview on January 10, 2025, Pope reiterated his commitment to addressing the rebounding issues. He acknowledged that the team had been one of the top defensive rebounding percentage teams in the country but had recently struggled in this area. Pope emphasized the need to rethink strategies to enhance defensive rebounding, especially given the physicality of Southeastern Conference (SEC) play.
Despite these challenges, the Wildcats have shown resilience. On February 8, 2025, they secured an 80-57 victory over South Carolina, snapping a two-game losing streak. The team’s defense was particularly commendable, holding the Gamecocks to their lowest first-half point total of the season. Head coach Mark Pope praised the players for their focus and resilience, highlighting the contributions of Koby Brea and Lamont Butler, who returned from injury.
