West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries had plenty to be proud of after his team’s impressive 73-55 victory over TCU on February 25, 2025. The win not only showcased the Mountaineers’ defensive prowess but also solidified their momentum heading into the postseason. DeVries, who has been vocal about the importance of playing with energy and consistency, highlighted the team’s complete performance and praised individual players for stepping up in key moments.

“I thought our defense got us started,” DeVries said in his postgame remarks. “We were able to get in the open floor and got some open transition ones.”

From the opening tip, West Virginia set the tone with their aggressive and disciplined defense. TCU struggled to find any rhythm as the Mountaineers forced turnovers and contested every shot. This defensive intensity allowed West Virginia to capitalize on fast breaks and create high-percentage scoring opportunities. The result was a comfortable lead that they maintained throughout the game.

One of the standout performances came from guard Javon Small, who delivered a stellar all-around game. Small finished with 23 points and 10 assists, controlling the tempo and making plays on both ends of the court. His ability to find open teammates and hit big shots kept the Horned Frogs on their heels. DeVries was quick to acknowledge Small’s leadership and impact on the game.

“Javon was fantastic tonight,” DeVries said. “He played with so much confidence and poise. When he’s playing like that, it makes everyone around him better.”

Another player who made a significant impact was Sencire Harris. The sophomore guard had a career-high 13 points, providing a much-needed spark off the bench. Harris’s energy and hustle were evident in every possession, and his contributions were crucial in keeping TCU at bay. DeVries praised Harris’s development and readiness to step up when called upon.

“I’m so proud of Sencire,” DeVries said. “He’s worked so hard, and tonight he showed how valuable he is to this team. His energy was contagious.”

One of the game’s most memorable moments came when center Eduardo Andre dove for a loose ball, exemplifying the kind of effort and commitment DeVries has been emphasizing all season.

“That’s what it is all about,” DeVries said. “Plays like that set the tone. When you see a big guy diving on the floor, it inspires everyone. That’s a big play and a tone-setting play.”

West Virginia’s ability to maintain their intensity for the full forty minutes was another point of satisfaction for DeVries. The team has had its ups and downs throughout the season, but this performance showed their potential when they stay locked in from start to finish.

“We talked a lot about playing a complete game,” DeVries said. “Tonight, I think we did that. We defended well, we shared the ball, and we played with energy. If we can keep this up, I like our chances moving forward.”

As the Mountaineers gear up for the final stretch of the season and look toward the NCAA tournament, this win over TCU serves as a statement. With DeVries at the helm and his players buying into his vision, West Virginia appears ready to make a serious run.
