In a bold move that’s drawing attention across the college basketball community, Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has broken his silence on an issue many others have chosen to ignore. As 363 national coaches stay quiet, Pope has addressed what he calls a “major red flag” draining the spirit and flow of NCAA basketball: the excessive and often disruptive use of late-game official reviews.

The increasing number of official stoppages during crucial moments of games has become a point of frustration for players, coaches, and fans alike. Reviews aimed at ensuring call accuracy often result in drawn-out delays, breaking the game’s rhythm and sapping excitement from tightly contested matchups. Despite the obvious impact on the game, most NCAA Division I coaches have avoided speaking out—until now.

Mark Pope, known for his typically measured and positive approach, is stepping up with a call for change. In a recent radio interview, Pope voiced his frustration and proposed a solution that could revolutionize how game reviews are handled in college basketball.

“I love this game, and I think we all want it to be the best version of itself,” Pope said. “But these constant stoppages, especially in the final minutes, are taking something away from the energy and intensity that make college basketball so special. We need a better system.”

Pope’s suggestion? Introducing a coach’s challenge system similar to the one used in the NBA. Under his proposal, each coach would be given one opportunity per game to challenge a call they believe was incorrect. The challenge would prompt an official review, but this strategic decision would be left in the hands of the coaches—not dictated by automatic official stoppages.

“Give us one flag, one chance to challenge,” Pope explained. “It puts some responsibility on us as coaches to decide when it’s worth stopping play. And it keeps the game moving, instead of having review after review slow everything down.”

This idea has been met with mixed reactions. Supporters argue that it could drastically cut down on unnecessary interruptions while still preserving fairness and accuracy. Others worry it might put too much pressure on coaches to make quick, strategic decisions in high-stakes moments.

Despite the controversy, Pope’s willingness to address the issue head-on has sparked discussions across the league. With 363 Division I coaches largely staying silent on the matter, his vocal stance positions him as a leader pushing for change in the sport.

Even players and fans have taken notice. Social media has been buzzing with debates on the effectiveness of the current review system and the merits of Pope’s proposal. Many agree that the NCAA must find a balance between call accuracy and maintaining the fast-paced excitement of college basketball.

As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen whether the NCAA will take action. But one thing is clear: Mark Pope’s decision to speak out has ignited a movement for change, and the basketball community is finally

starting to listen.
