Aryna Sabalenka emerged victorious at the Miami Open, securing the championship with a commanding win over Jessica Pegula. The Belarusian star showcased her power and precision, overpowering her American opponent in a high-stakes final.
Sabalenka, known for her aggressive playing style and formidable serve, dominated the match, dictating the pace from the outset. Pegula, despite her resilience and strategic gameplay, struggled to counter Sabalenka’s relentless attacks. The match highlighted Sabalenka’s ability to control rallies and capitalize on key moments, ultimately leading her to triumph.
Miami Gardens, USA (AFP) – Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka claimed the Miami Open title on Saturday, defeating American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 in the WTA 1000 final at Hard Rock Stadium
The Belarusian claimed her first Miami title and secured her second victory of the season after winning in Brisbane in January.
After losing the Indian Wells final earlier this month to 17-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva, Sabalenka was determined to avoid another disappointment.
“Winning this trophy means so much,” she said, also acknowledging Pegula’s strong performance.
Both players had difficulty holding serve in the opening set, with Pegula putting Sabalenka under pressure by drawing her to the net. However, the momentum shifted when Pegula served to stay in the set at 6-5. Sabalenka seized the opportunity with a precise forehand drop shot followed by a stunning down-the-line winner to claim the set.
Although she was broken in her opening service game of the second set, Sabalenka quickly regained control. Her path to victory was smoother from there, bouncing back after missing out on a third consecutive Australian Open title, having lost the Melbourne final to Madison Keys earlier this year.
This victory adds another prestigious title to Sabalenka’s growing list of achievements, reinforcing her position among the top players in women’s tennis. Pegula, though falling short in the final, demonstrated her consistency and skill throughout the tournament, proving once again that she remains a strong competitor on the tour.
Sabalenka’s win in Miami further cements her reputation as one of the sport’s elite players, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
