Where Are They Now? Former 49ers QBs from the Kyle Shanahan Era
The San Francisco 49ers are entering the 2025 season with a solid quarterback duo in Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. But it’s fascinating to look back and see where all the quarterbacks who played under head coach Kyle Shanahan have ended up.
Since taking over in 2017, Shanahan has worked with quite a few signal-callers. Here’s a look at each one and their current status, in order:
Brian Hoyer
Hoyer was the starter in Shanahan’s first regular season game in 2017. He went 0-6 before being released, later rejoining the Patriots. Most recently with the Raiders in 2023, he’s currently a free agent and may be close to retirement at 39.
C.J. Beathard
Drafted in 2017, Beathard replaced Hoyer midseason but struggled during his tenure. After leaving San Francisco in 2020, he spent time with the Jaguars and Dolphins, appearing last for Jacksonville in 2023. He’s currently a free agent, likely looking for a backup or practice squad role.
Jimmy Garoppolo
Acquired via trade in 2017, Garoppolo was once seen as the team’s future, though his time in San Francisco was filled with ups and downs. He’s now backing up Matthew Stafford with the Rams, potentially setting up some amusing reunions.
Nick Mullens
A key backup during Garoppolo’s injury-plagued seasons in 2018 and 2020, Mullens most recently played for the Vikings. For 2025, he’s expected to serve as Trevor Lawrence’s backup in Jacksonville.
Trey Lance
The much-hyped but ultimately disappointing third overall pick in 2021 is now trying to make the roster with the Chargers after a brief and unremarkable stint in Dallas. His future remains uncertain.
Josh Johnson
Best (or worst) remembered for stepping in during the 2022 NFC Championship after Purdy was injured, Johnson has played for numerous teams. He’s currently with the Washington Commanders.
Sam Darnold
Darnold served as a capable backup to Purdy in 2023 and then had a strong showing with the Vikings in 2024. That earned him the starting job in Seattle, where he’ll face the 49ers in Week 1.
Brandon Allen
Allen had a rough lone start with the 49ers, losing badly to Green Bay in 2024. He’s now with the Tennessee Titans as they look to rebuild.
Joshua Dobbs
Dobbs started the 2024 regular season finale for the 49ers and has bounced between several teams. He’s now on the Patriots’ roster.
Each of these quarterbacks has had their moment under Kyle Shanahan, though some were brief or forgettable. Looking ahead, the 49ers hope that Brock Purdy remains their long-term answer under center for years to come.
