Hamilton has experienced a rollercoaster season with his new Ferrari team, marked by highs like his sprint race victory at the Chinese Grand Prix and lows that have left him frustrated.
Reflecting on his podium finish in the Miami sprint race, the 40-year-old said: “It was a tough session. I have mixed feelings. The result in the sprint was solid, but it wasn’t down to raw pace.
“We made a good strategic call, but performance-wise, we just didn’t have it.
“I was one of the first to arrive this morning to ensure we were fully prepared, but it didn’t change anything. The car behaves differently every time I drive it.”
Hamilton couldn’t conceal his frustration after missing out on Q3 and a spot in the top 10 for the race, while his teammate Charles Leclerc managed only eighth on the grid.
“We were out-qualified by Williams—they’re doing a great job,” Hamilton said. “Charles made it through with a new tyre, which made the difference. If I’d had one more fresh set, maybe I’d have reached Q3 too. But even then, it would’ve been P8 or P9.”
He continued: “The sprint went better than qualifying, but we need upgrades, we need improvements—we’re doing everything we can. I’ve tried everything, and we’re still just not quick enough.”
Looking ahead to Sunday, Hamilton remains uncertain whether predicted rain will give him an edge.
He mentioned, “The car didn’t perform well in the wet conditions. I’m not sure if it will be any better tomorrow, but we’ll see. I’ll be praying a lot tonight. There’s definitely an opportunity. If the race starts dry and then turns wet, that could be interesting. But luck will play a part too.”
