In a recent press conference, Auburn men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl addressed questions regarding freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford’s performance and development. Pearl emphasized Pettiford’s dedication and willingness to be coached, stating, “He’s done a good job. He wants to compete. Tahaad wants to be coached. He wants to get better. He asks questions.”
Pearl further highlighted Pettiford’s impressive progression, noting that based on preseason expectations, Pettiford has surpassed his initial ranking. He remarked, “He is, I’d say, based on preseason expectations? He’s the best freshman in the country, based on preseason expectations. Let’s just say he was, what, 25th? He’s not the 25th-best freshman in the country.”
Pettiford’s journey to Auburn began with his commitment in February 2023. Rated as a five-star recruit and the No. 3 point guard in the class of 2024, he chose Auburn over programs like Kansas, Kentucky, and UCLA. At the time of his commitment, Pettiford expressed his confidence in Auburn’s ability to elevate his game, stating, “Going on that visit, stepping on the campus, it just felt like a second home to me. It felt like a place where I knew I could play at and they could help me excel my game and take me to the next level.”
Since joining the Tigers, Pettiford has made significant contributions. In Auburn’s 87-58 victory over Monmouth, he recorded nine points, five assists, a rebound, and a steal in 26 minutes off the bench. Throughout the season, he has averaged 11.2 points and 3.1 assists per game, showcasing his ability to adapt and excel at the collegiate level.
Pettiford’s fearless approach was evident in Auburn’s 94-85 win over the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide. With the score tied at 65, Pettiford confidently sank a three-pointer that shifted the game’s momentum in Auburn’s favor. Assistant coach Steven Pearl praised Pettiford’s courage, stating, “Tahaad is a fearless basketball player and that’s a good shot for him. As soon as he shot it, we had all the confidence in the world that he was gonna knock it down.”
Pettiford’s standout performance came during Auburn’s historic 74-69 win over the No. 4 Houston Cougars. He led the team with 21 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from three-point range. Reflecting on the game, Pettiford said, “It wasn’t my day (against Vermont), but it was my teammates’. Coach always tells us not every game is going to be your game, but just be ready when the time comes. Today was my time.”
Coach Pearl’s coaching philosophy emphasizes tough love and discipline. He believes that players respond positively to being coached hard when they know it’s rooted in care and respect. This approach has fostered a culture where players like Pettiford thrive, understanding that rigorous coaching is a testament to the coaching staff’s investment in their development.
As the season progresses, Pettiford’s growth and contributions will be pivotal to Auburn’s success. His journey from a highly-touted recruit to a key player underscores the importance of a supportive and challenging environment, one that Coach Pearl has meticulously cultivated at Auburn.
