Viktor Gyokeres: Arsenal’s Potential Striking Solution and the Key to Arteta’s Summer Rebuild

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new center-forward has intensified as the summer transfer window approaches. While Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak remains the club’s primary target, his staggering £150 million price tag has forced Arsenal to explore alternatives. One such name on their radar is Sporting Lisbon’s prolific Swedish forward, Viktor Gyokeres.

Crystal Palace come from behind TWICE to draw with Arsenal!

April 23, 2025

The 26-year-old has taken European football by storm, delivering exceptional performances since his move from Coventry City to Sporting in 2023. With 85 goals in two seasons, including 42 this campaign alone, Gyokeres has cemented himself as one of the most lethal strikers in Portugal. His contributions extend beyond just goals—he has also provided 11 assists, showcasing his ability to link up play effectively.

A Record-Breaking Spell at Sporting

Gyokeres’ journey to prominence has been remarkable. When Sporting signed him for €20 million (£16.7 million) in what was then a club-record transfer fee, many questioned whether he could adapt to the demands of Portuguese football. However, under the tactical guidance of Ruben Amorim, and later Joao Pereira and Rui Borges, he thrived. His first season saw him register 43 goals and 15 assists, numbers that raised eyebrows across Europe.

This season, he has silenced any doubters who believed his initial success might have been a one-off. His hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League served as a statement performance, showcasing his ability to deliver on the biggest stage. Gyokeres’ mix of speed, strength, and technical ability makes him an ideal modern striker—one capable of both bullying defenders and linking up with attacking teammates.

Why Arsenal Want Gyokeres

Mikel Arteta has made signing a world-class striker a top priority. Despite Arsenal’s strong performances in the Premier League, their lack of a consistent goal scorer has been a glaring issue. Gabriel Jesus, while an industrious forward, has struggled with injuries, while Kai Havertz has not yet proven himself as a reliable No. 9.

New sporting director Andrea Berta, who recently joined from Atletico Madrid, has quickly identified Gyokeres as a viable option. At a price of around £58.5 million, he is a far more affordable alternative to Isak. Furthermore, his playing style fits seamlessly into Arsenal’s tactical approach. His ability to press high, hold up the ball, and convert chances in crucial moments makes him an appealing target for Arteta’s system.

European football expert Andy Brassell has emphasized that Gyokeres possesses all the attributes Arsenal need. “He’s quick, he’s strong, he’s big, he’s not easily intimidated, and he can create as well as score,” Brassell noted. He added that Gyokeres’ ability to step up in important moments is what sets him apart from other options.

How He Compares to Benjamin Sesko

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is another name frequently linked to Arsenal. At just 21 years old, Sesko is considered one of Europe’s brightest young strikers. However, despite his potential, concerns remain about his finishing ability. With 17 goals this season, he has shown promise but lacks the consistent output that Arsenal require.

Gyokeres, on the other hand, is already a proven goal scorer at a high level. While Sesko’s development may take time, Arsenal’s immediate ambitions to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League demand a forward who can deliver right away.

Brassell highlighted the difference between the two players, stating, “Sesko has plenty of technical ability and potential, but Gyokeres is more of a battering ram and a pure scorer. Arsenal need someone who can take responsibility and score big goals in big games—Gyokeres fits that profile perfectly.”

Gyokeres’ Potential Role at Arsenal

If Arsenal secure Gyokeres’ signature, he would likely become the focal point of Arteta’s attack. With Bukayo Saka on the right and a potential signing like Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams on the left, Arsenal could boast one of the most dynamic front threes in the Premier League.

Arteta’s system relies on fluid movement, pressing, and quick transitions. Gyokeres’ ability to drop deep and involve himself in build-up play, combined with his predatory instincts inside the box, make him a strong tactical fit. His physicality would also add a new dimension to Arsenal’s attack, something they have lacked against physical defenses.

A Smart Financial Move for Arsenal

In today’s inflated transfer market, value-for-money signings are crucial. Sporting’s reported asking price of £58.5 million for Gyokeres is reasonable given his output. Sporting are set to make a significant profit on their initial investment, but the fee remains a bargain compared to some of the astronomical sums being demanded for other strikers.

Arsenal’s willingness to invest in Gyokeres also signals a shift in their recruitment strategy. With Berta’s influence, the club appears keen on identifying players who are not just talented but also represent smart business decisions. Given Gyokeres’ form and his ability to perform at the highest level, he could be the striker who finally helps Arsenal mount a serious title challenge.

Could Gyokeres Be the Missing Piece for Arsenal?

Arsenal have been on an upward trajectory under Arteta, but the final step to becoming Premier League champions has eluded them. A world-class striker could be the missing piece in their puzzle. Gyokeres has already demonstrated that he can handle pressure, score in big matches, and deliver consistent numbers over multiple seasons.

While Isak remains Arsenal’s dream target, financial realities may push them toward a more pragmatic option. Gyokeres represents a blend of proven quality, affordability, and tactical suitability—all crucial factors in making him a top candidate for Arsenal’s summer rebuild.

As the transfer window approaches, Arsenal’s next move will be crucial. If they act decisively, Gyokeres could be the striker who finally propels them back to Premier League glory.
