Lewis Hamilton Hits Back at Monaco Tax Criticism After Tyson Fury’s Dig
Lewis Hamilton has issued a firm response to renewed criticism over his residency in Monaco, following public jabs from heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has long faced scrutiny for living in the principality—often accused by some of avoiding UK taxes—despite his immense contributions to British sport.
The controversy flared up again after Fury, known for his outspoken nature, took a swipe at Hamilton during a recent media appearance. “I don’t see the point of pretending to fly the British flag when you don’t even want to pay taxes here,” Fury remarked. Though he didn’t mention Hamilton by name, the comments were widely interpreted as a dig at the F1 star, who has become synonymous with both global success and high-profile activism.
Hamilton, never one to shy away from confrontation, responded defiantly:
“I’ve paid more taxes in the UK than most people will in their lifetimes. I’m proud of my roots, proud to represent the UK around the world, and I give back in many ways that people don’t always see.”
He went on to emphasize his commitment to philanthropy, youth development programs, and increasing diversity in motorsport—efforts he says are far more impactful than “point-scoring debates about residency.”
While Hamilton’s Monaco address is a common choice among elite athletes and drivers due to its favorable tax laws, the British driver maintains that his financial contributions and charitable efforts reflect his continued dedication to his homeland.
The spat highlights ongoing tensions around celebrity wealth, public image, and national loyalty. For Hamilton, however, the focus remains firmly on his legacy—on and off the track.
